This month’s JCC Cinema session introduced the film ‘Haru’s jouney’ to all those in attendance. Directed by Kobayashi Masahiro the film features Eri Tokunaga and Tatsuya Nakadai as the main characters. The story begins when Haru (Eri Tokunaga) suddenly finds herself without a job and decides to move to Tokyo where there are more job opportunities. However, despite her best efforts, her grandfather Tadao is unwilling to accompany her.
This sparks the journey through Japan’s main island, Honshu, to find other family members to take care of Tadao. The first visit on their journey is to Tadao’s older brother and after a few testy arguments it is apparent that there is more to Tadao’s difficult personality than meets the eye.
Haru begins to learn more about her grandfather and her family background along their journey, even making the selfless decision to care for her grandfather for the rest of his life. Both Haru and her grandfather’s personalities are portrayed in contrast to one another as the themes of family and acceptance are explored in this film.
